Blog Review: Hari's Corner

Hari's Corner

This is a re-review of Hari's Corner. The first time was on my other blog, here: Blog Review: Hari's Corner. Hari asked for the re-review since he noticed I was becoming more critical when doing the reviews.

What is "Hari's Corner" all about?

In his own words, it's about his "humour, cartoons, tech, software, reviews, essays, articles and HOWTOs intermingled with random philosophy now and then".

Hari seems to write in spurts, continuing on for days on end, and then taking a break for days on end. That's his way and he won't change for anyone. He's a little busy these days, working on things for his blogging software.

Site Design

The blog is attractive, both in color scheme and design. Hari created the skin himself. The sidebar has no clutter and no slow-loading widgets to contend with.

Since my last review of his site, Hari has switched from the WordPress platform to the b2evolution platform for blogging. He even wrote the code for importing the database.

The key elements I look for in a blog are there. I don't agree, however, with the placement of his "contact" link in the footer. It's the last place most people would look for it.

Article and Post Content

There's so much good stuff on Hari's blog, it's hard to point out any one article as being better than another. Since I'm a link loving fool, I'll pick a recent one.

One of Hari's noms de plume (go ahead, look it up), Papa Hari, has declared the Papa Hari World Government bans hyperlinks. Well now, aren't we in a pickle?

My Overall Opinion

I really like Hari's blog. I really like Hari. When Hari doesn't visit any of my blogs for weeks at a time, I feel as if something is amiss. When Hari writes consistently, it's one of my favorite (or favourite since he likes the British form) blogs to visit.

Hari is Indian. No, not what the U.S. Native Americans were formerly called, but a true Indian. You'd never know it from his writings, however, because he commands the British form of English better than many people who write English as their first language.

Article Reviews #3: Blogs At BloggingZoom

Categories: Article Reviews Tags: , , , , , , , RT Cunningham @ 4:05 pm

Magnifying Glass If you're searching for something to read, and you don't know where to start, the published posts at BloggingZoom is a place I'd recommend wholeheartedly. If you want to read the best of the best, and not deal with a bunch of whimpering 12-year olds, this is the place to go.

  • There is no such thing as "easy money", as Don Miller reasoned at Making Sales Making Money with "The Lure of Easy Money, It’s Gotta Very Strong Appeal". Market your knowledge, not your time and money.
  • Terry Didcott at Make Money Hints explained why producing fresh content regularly keeps you higher in the SERPS (search engine results pages) than irregular posting. I think he overdid the "fast make money" phrase, but that's just my opinion.
  • Steve McGrath of McGrath Dot Ca successfully goaded some fellow bloggers, including me, into reading something different from what is assumed by proclaiming that Court, Vic, Griz, X Are Full Of … I have to agree with his assessment. Really.
  • Rod listed some things about "Wordpress 2.5: What You Need To Know" at BloggingNotes.net. What he didn't know is that the new widget code breaks some of the pre-2.5 widgets, something I quickly found out during my recent upgrade.
  • Just like me, Shamim of TeqEdge Blog experienced broken plugins and wrote "Wordpress 2.5 - Know Before Upgrading". I wish I read it before I started upgrading. Luckily, I was able to fix the plugins I use; the ones that hadn't been upgraded yet.
  • Grizzly pointed out that Internet marketing isn't blogging at How to Make Money Online for Beginners. He issued a challenge that I felt obligated to ignore because I'm not much of a marketer, at least not yet.
  • Costa vented his frustrations about meta blogging back in January at Blog Gigs. I'll repeat what I wrote in the comments: Unless you’re trying to get rich off your blog, I say don’t worry about it. You can always start another that focuses on another topic. The key is to enjoy what you’re doing. If you aren’t, then you need to stop and concentrate on something else.
  • Jason Clark, one of the guys responsible for Pop Critics (which is in my queue to be reviewed) told us that there's no country for boring Oscars. The movie disc, No Country For Old Men, is sitting near my computer. Since it won best picture, maybe I should watch it.
  • Back to Don Miller again. He announced "Monika Mundell Joins the Team and More". That lady seems to be popping up in a whole bunch of places I have in my feedreader. This is a good thing, I assure you.
  • Speaking of Monica Mundell… her latest article at The Writers Manifesto Blog is about creating BANS clone sites they easy way, with WordPress. I'm glad I read this, because now I know I can do it as soon as I can get to it. I have some issues I have to work out, or I'd be on it already.

Blog Review: Ed Borden : PWNING 9-5

Ed Borden : PWNING 9-5

What is "Ed Borden : PWNING 9-5" all about?

Ed Borden is the Director of Business Development at Puget Systems, a high-end custom systems builder. His blog is about the PC gaming industry from inside the industry, focusing on the gaming, business and hardware aspects.

Site Design

The site is hosted with his own domain on Blogger (blogspot.com). Everything you need on a blog is there, but the title attributes of the vertical icons on the left need to be corrected. Both "home" and "email" say "email" and both RSS icons say "rss" when the second should say "rss by email" or something like that.

Other than that, the theme looks great. The sidebar doesn't appear cluttered and it isn't overwhelmed by slow-loading widgets.

Article and Post Content

Although Ed is a professional, he sometimes writes his posts in the way gamers write on forums. It doesn't detract from the experience. His target audience will understand it and that's what matters. Consider the blog title.

Let's take his article on "A Network Card That Gives You the Power to DESTROY" as an example. The caption contains "ftw", which means "for the win". The rest of the article has very little "gaming language", which can be understood even by non-gamers like me.

My Overall Opinion

It's too early to guess whether this blog will do well or not. When Ed requested the review, he was using the blogspot.com domain. He just recently started using his own domain; hence the traffic stats won't be accurate for a few months, even with redirects in place.

It may be a gaming blog, but I look at it as a technology blog as well. Technology blogs, which remain focused on specific topics, always seem to do well. I look forward to dropping in from time to time.
